Mediation as an Alternative Method of Conflict Resolution in Nigeria (A Study of Citizens’ Rights and Mediation Centre, Enugu)

Abstract:

The study was undertaken to explore mediation as an alternative method of conflict resolution in Nigeria with particular reference to ‘’Citizens’ Rights and Mediation Centre, Enugu. Findings were made from responses of 111 respondents from the study area. Cross-sectional survey design was adopted for this work, and were used to elicit data for this study. The study also made use of questionnaire as a means of collecting quantitative primary data. Statistical methods such as tables and percentages were employed for data analysis. The result shows that all the 8 ADR strategies/mechanisms listed in the questionnaire items were found to be applicable or available at CRMC, Enugu; available conflict/dispute resolution strategies were ineffective in resolving conflict/dispute at the CRMC, Enugu; the rate of success of the centre in disputes such as contract of employment, violence against women, debt related matter, land dispute matter and maintaining community cohesion are low; and the centre is encountering some problems due to inadequate provision of physical amenities and shortage of qualified personnel.
